“Nothing But Equality”: The Story of a Victory for the Gender Identity Law in Argentina

Authored by Fundacion Huesped: Paloma Loreti Gambaccini, Public Advocacy Analyst; Julia Kors, Senior Public Advocacy Analyst, and Camila Serrao, Researcher

Nothing But Equality is a short documentary that tells the story of the collective path toward Argentina’s Gender Identity Law, one of the most progressive legal frameworks for trans rights worldwide, and its profound impact on the health and well-being of trans communities.

The film is based on the witness seminar on the Gender Identity Law and its impact on health, produced by Fundación Huésped and the Association of Travestis, Transgender and Transsexual People of Argentina (ATTTA) in December 2023. Eleven years after the law’s enactment, it brings together testimonies from key LGBTIQ+ activists who played a central role in advancing this landmark legislation.

Since its release, the documentary has received national and international recognition, including the Best Dissident Documentary Award at the 4th Dissident Film Festival (2024) in Guatemala City, and First Place in the Documentary category at the 1st “Luz, Llama, Acción” Short Film Competition (2024) in San Luis, Argentina.

Moreover, the film was screened at the National Congress of Argentina to mark the 12th anniversary of the enactment of the Gender Identity Law, as well as as part of film-debate events at the National Youth Collective Meeting in 2024 and with Amnesty International Argentina’s youth group in 2025.

Among its presentations are a wide range of festivals and events, including Festival Visibla (Buenos Aires City), the LGBTIQ+ Film Series in Mar del Plata, the National Youth Gathering (Argentina), the 1st Queer Film Festival Kathmandu (Kathmandu), the 16th Roberto Di Chiara International Short Film Competition (Argentina), BA Filma (Buenos Aires Province), LASA (San Francisco, United States), the Ahmedabad International Film Festival 2025, the Papagena Festival (Pernambuco, Brazil) and the Human Rights Film Festival (Argentina).

From Fundación Huésped, we especially highlight the prior journey that made this work possible and led us to these national and international spaces. The path built through the witness seminar with ATTTA was key to strengthening relationships, building trust, and producing situated knowledge. Nothing But Equality is both the result and the expression of this collective process: a documentary that recovers memories, voices, and struggles from within the trans community itself, and that reaffirms a core conviction of our work. Rights are guaranteed from and with communities: listening to their voices is not enough; it is essential to create spaces where they are protagonists, where policies are conceived, designed, and implemented in direct alignment with their historically marginalized demands, knowledge, and needs.
